Sport Hot Pepper Plants are famous as the traditional pickled pepper served on Chicago-style hot dogs. These slender peppers deliver bright, tangy heat that cuts through the richness of a classic hot dog loaded with mustard, relish, onions, tomatoes, pickles, and celery salt. If you love authentic Chicago ballpark food, growing Sport peppers lets you recreate that unmistakable flavor right from your garden.

Beyond hot dogs, Sport peppers are prized for their versatility in the kitchen. Their sharp, vinegary heat makes them excellent on Italian beef sandwiches, the iconic Italian beef and sausage combo, burgers, pizza, nachos, salads, and antipasto platters. They’re also a favorite condiment for Southern-style greens and beans and even a spicy garnish for Bloody Mary cocktails. The sturdy plants produce clusters of medium peppers that ripen from green to red and can reach about 15,000 -20,000 Scoville Heat Units.

Sport Hot Pepper – Fun Facts

From Maxwell Street Market to Chicago Street Food
The rise of sport peppers is tied to Chicago street food history. At Maxwell Street Market in the 1930s and 1940s, vendors served inexpensive “Depression sandwiches” piled high with vegetables like onions, pickles, tomatoes, and sport peppers. These hearty sandwiches stretched simple ingredients into filling meals that cost only a few cents.

Why Sport Peppers Became the Chicago Hot Dog Pepper
Sport peppers eventually became one of the “seven sacred condiments” that define the classic Chicago style hot dog. The famous combination includes yellow mustard, bright green relish, chopped onions, tomato slices, a dill pickle spear, celery salt, and the signature pickled sport peppers.

Vienna Beef, Baseball, and the Ballpark Tradition
As the Chicago style hot dog grew in popularity, companies like Vienna Beef helped standardize the famous combination of toppings that define the classic dog, including the pickled sport pepper. The tradition became closely tied to Chicago baseball culture, where fans at games for the Cubs at Wrigley Field and the White Sox on the South Side enjoyed hot dogs piled high with the signature toppings and the unmistakable kick of sport peppers.

Why They’re Essential for Italian Beef Sandwiches
Sport peppers are also a signature topping on Chicago’s famous Italian beef sandwiches and the iconic Italian beef and sausage combo, adding bright heat that cuts through the rich meat.

Why It’s Such a Fun Pepper to Grow
Many gardeners grow sport peppers specifically to recreate authentic Chicago street food at home. Harvest your own peppers, pickle them, and suddenly backyard cookouts taste like a day at the ballpark.

    Finally Found my Sport Peppers

Grew up in Chicago eating these on hotdogs from Portillo's. Moved to the Western US, and no one has ever heard of sport peppers. Finally found these online from Clovers. Good to be back to them. Froze some for winter dogs. Looking forward to spring for re-order.
